STORY
Since 1947 Leonardesca has been an excellence brand in the field of fine arts: in the famous homonymous manufacturer company the canvases were hand-primed by using natural based receipt; the drying of the canvas was open air from one to three days depending on the kind of coating (oil or gesso). The place where the canvases were dried were characterized by constant temperature and humidity to achieve an optimal final result
Quality of the yams, carefulness in the weaving and in the finishing are nowadays, as in the past, the flagship of the company
Once the canvas is received at our premises, it is combed, the selvedge is cut off and it is calandered accordingly to the different kind or canvas; at this point it is ready for the coating
PRIMER
The coatings and their application techniques are fundamental for the good final result together with the kind of the raw canvas and the composition of the receipt. All over the years, Leonardesca has been able to improve these techniques with experience; currently we still check every phase of the production with the utmost care and the final aspect results therefore homogeneous.
UNIVERSAL PREPARATION
The most requested canvases, thanks to their versatility, are the cotton polyester and mixed fibres with universal preparation. They are machine coated and this industrial process respects precise rules.
LINEN & JUTE CANVASES
Universally primed linen and jute require a longer production process. Firstly they are coated with two coats of glue and then with two coats of universal preparation or gesso preparation, more absorbent
OIL PRIMING
The oil priming require a more complex process and need the utmost care and attention. Two coats of glue, two coats of priming and then one or more coats of oil (up to 7 total coats) are applied.
Then the canvas in dried in long ovens with mild temperatures to avoid changes in the canvas’ characteristics
The canvases were then dried in the open air, from one to three days depending on the type of finishing, oil or gesso, in environments where temperature and humidity had been controlled to obtain an optimal result
And then rolled on rolls of different length
The canvas is now ready for a trip around the world, to satisfy all the different requests of the artists that want to use for their work an Italian quality product.
